Overview
Police foundations graduates are prepared for entry into careers in security and related occupations, and to pursue the additional training specific to careers in the various police and military forces. Successful graduates of the program have the ability to withstand pressure, communicate effectively, act as problem-solvers and have the ability to help people in the community. In addition, they have knowledge of current law enforcement methods, conflict resolution techniques, criminal proceedings, community policing principles and the experience necessary to carry out decisions which they can apply in further police training.

Centennial College expects students applying for admission to certificate or diploma programs to present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. Possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.

  • Applicants are advised that some program experiences may require a criminal reference check. Certain criminal convictions may disallow participation in these experiences and program completion may not be possible. Monetary Requirements
  • Tuition costs: $2,400 each year
  • Uniform fee: $400 extra
  • Textbooks for first year are approximately $1,000 and approximately $800 for second year
Standard Policing Requirements
Listed below are the criterion's necessary for a career in policing. Failure to meet these minimum standards will disqualify applicants from a career in policing, regardless of how successful they are in this program. Our faculty uses these requirements as counseling tools to guide applicants toward success. For specific information on these and other requirements, please contact the program coordinator.
  • No criminal record: To be considered for a career in policing, applicants must be of good moral character and habits. This means that they are individuals who other people look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity. Applicants for police services in Ontario must be able to pass a security clearance as well as a background investigation including CPIC, credit and reference checks.
  • A valid driver's license: Applicants must have a valid "G" driver's license before starting policing duties and a clean driving abstract (record). If applicants have driving violations, they cannot submit their application to police services until their driving demerit point accumulation is six points or less for permanent drivers and three points or less for probationary drivers.
  • First aid and/ or CPR certification: Applicants must possess a current standard first aid certificate and a Basic Rescuer (level C) CPR or equivalent certificate. Centennial’s Continuing Education department offers these courses throughout the year.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Vision: Vision requirements vary between agencies. Applicants are advised to check with individual agencies.
    • Hearing: Standard normal hearing (frequencies of 500 to 3000Hz).
    • Physical Fitness: Applicants must meet the minimum standards of the Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test

(Your sketchbook should demonstrate your problem-solving and creative process as well as present work in variety of media, materials and techniques. Include three drawings from direct observation, such as figure drawing, portrait and still-life.)
Show work that demonstrates your ability and interest in graphic design
Include colour integrated designs created in digital illustration and digital imaging applications
Include a short research paper about your design philosophy and field of interest
Present mounted or framed work in your portfolio case. Please number all pieces in your portfolio

A portfolio is a demonstration of your creativity and ability to communicate visually. Portfolio pieces may include: life drawings, sketches, paintings, sculptures or digitally produced artwork.

Note: Preference will be given to applicants that can demonstrate some familiarity with one or more graphics applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, 3DS Max or Maya. Applicants who do not submit digital artwork will be tested to determine their level of computer proficiency.

* A Class “F” license is required for employment in the province of Ontario (but not for program admission)
* Completion of CPR Level HCP course (Health Care Provider) and standard first aid certification.
* As part of Clinical and/or Field Placements, students are required to complete Mask Fit Testing, which may require students to be clean shaven at time of testing, during clinical and/or field placements.
* It is strongly recommended that applicants have a high level of fitness when entering the program. There is a lifting evaluation process that students must pass in each semester in order to move on.
* Before taking this program, applicants should be aware that under the provisions of the Ambulance Act, employment as a paramedic:
* A) Is prohibited to any individual who, in the past year has:
o Received six or more demerit points on his/ her driving record
o Had his/ her driver’s licence suspended in the previous two years
o Been prohibited from driving under the Criminal Code of Canada within the past three years
o OR has been convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude for which she/ he has not been pardoned
* B) Requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.

* Costs for this program are approximately $1,719 each semester
