Are you looking to obtain a strong business foundation? Do you have an
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status
(19 years or older)? Have you completed
English Grade 12 C or U or equivalent, or skills assessment and Math Grade 11
C, M or U, or Grade 12 C or U or equivalent or skills assessment. If you
answered ‘yes’ to these questions, you may want to consider the two-year
Business program at Centennial College, which familiarizes students with
everything from international business concepts to human resources and
marketing. These business fundamentals are essential
for entry-level positions in the field and as a base for further, more specific
study. “It’s a more general view of studying business,” says Angelina of the
Business program. “I would say it’s good for those who are yet undecided on
which major they want to go into or which topic interests them the most. Over
the two years, you will definitely come to know what your major is and what you
are good at. It will make it easier to decide what you want to go into.”
The offering is facilitated out of Progress Campus, the largest of
Centennial College’s campuses. This location houses other business programs,
allowing students to interact with their business peers and network with
industry professionals. This particular business program focuses on the
development of mathematical, computing, analytical and communication skills.
Further emphasis is placed on a solid grounding in the contemporary concepts,
theories and business practices, related to all the functional areas of the
business enterprise. A team of professors with strong academic backgrounds and
extensive business and management experience lead the Business program, which
offers technology-supported learning, in and out of the classroom. In addition to
learning the latest business technology, students also participate in teamwork, undertake case analyses and
pursue directed research on an individual basis. Lastly, they are exposed to
contemporary business practices. Specific courses within the Business program
include: Strategies for Business Success, Fundamentals of Business,
Microcomputer Applications Software, Mathematics of Finance, Financial
Accounting, Business Operations, Business Communications, International Business
Concepts, Principles of Marketing and more.
In addition of their business fundamentals school work, students will
develop a portfolio documenting their engagement with the College’s Global
Citizenship and Equity Institute that is meant to bring together research and
activities related to global citizenship and social justice education at the
College.
Students of the Business fundamentals program must have a minimum C
grade average and an overall GPA of 2.0. Once they graduate, students are able to
pursue a career or, if eligible, participate in articulated programs with selected universities,
institutes and professional associations. These partnerships allow students to
apply credits earned at Centennial College towards further study at other
institutions, including Royal Roads University, Griffith University, Davenport
University, and University of New Brunswick.
