Centennial College’s Centre
for Creative Communications is the college’s hub for all of its creative
options, including three advertising programs. Being based at this location
ensures that the students of these advertising program have access to
facilities that will enhance their learning and advance their readiness for the
field. The $36-million cutting-edge campus for the arts offers students access
to the latest advertising technology, computer labs and more. Additionally,
students of advertising programs have many opportunities for networking and
interacting with their peers.
While we normally associate
the advertising field with the ads that we see on TV, in newspapers, magazines
and on the Internet, there is must more to this booming industry. In 2010,
spending on advertising was estimated at more than $300-billion in the United
States and $500-billion worldwide — with many of those who attended advertising programs
working behind-the-scenes.
For example, at Centennial
College those who have an advertising background may attend Advertising: Media
Management or Advertising: Account Management. Both of these advertising
programs result in careers that involve managing the behind-the-scenes aspects
of the field.
Advertising: Account
Management prepares students for the client service area of the integrated
marketing and communications industry. As such, these Advertising program
students come to understand the full scope of advertising, digital, mobile and
social media platforms and can manage integrated communications plans from
inception to final production. The program boasts a combination of theory and
hands-on learning with students attending courses such as Advertising Research,
Media for Account Managers, and Agency Finance and Operations, and rounding out
their time with a 15-week industry field placement that allows them to gain
critical knowledge, professional relationships and work experience.
The other advertising
program at Centennial College that focuses on a behind-the-scene area of the
field is Advertising: Media Management. This hands-on and intensive
industry-approved advertising program offers students the fundamentals of media
management, with a focus on consumer-driven communication channel choices such
as mobile platform for advertising message. During the three semesters spent in
this advertising program students attend courses such as: Interactive Communications,
Media Research Data and Analyses, Introduction to Media Planning, Advertising
Planning and Campaign Management and more.
If, however, a student is
just entering the field for the first time and wishes to go into areas of
advertising such as marketing, interactive/mobile, copywriting, production,
direct marketing, promotions and event marketing, he or she may attend the
undergraduate Advertising program. Taking three years to complete, this
offering focuses on preparing students with the critical skills they’ll need to
enter this dynamic field, as they learn how to tell your clients’ stories with
persuasive advertising in addition to planning and developing campaigns on
mobile platforms. This Advertising program also includes an industry field
placement, during which students acquire experience in the day-to-day activities
of the advertising world.
