English Communication Training Prepares You For College Programs

Many people move to Canada without knowing the English language. This forms a barrier in communication, but this barrier does not have to last forever. Those who are interested may take post-secondary programs that help to enhance their reading, writing and communication skills. If you are interested in applying for this informative undertaking, you should possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition, applicants are required to participate in a language skills assessment. However, they are advised that the English communication training at Centennial College is not a program for absolute beginners. Students must have completed a beginner’s level language program prior to applying to the English for Academic Purposes program. Lastly, please not that possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.

As this is not a beginners program, the emphasis is on developing English language skills for success in college, university or a career by exhibiting a nurturing and supportive academic environment. You will build your strength in all areas of the language by completing presentations, assignments, group work, communicative activities, practical exercise and more. Throughout your studies in the English Second Language Training, you will be guided by experienced faculty and staff members. Specific English second courses include: Building Basic Language Skills (designed to build a foundation in all four language skills — speaking, listening, reading, and writing — which are essential for academic success), Guided Writing in English (you will be given practice in a variety of grammatical and structural forms), Approaches to English Composition (further develops the student’s ability to use the writing process to produce short prose pieces on a variety of topics and in a variety of modes), and more.

Students of English for Academic Purposes also have access to resources such as computer labs, the library, conversation practice groups and tutoring. In addition, this English communication training program is fully accredited by Languages Canada, Canada’s premier language organization. This means it has met rigorous standards in terms of curriculum, teacher qualifications, student services and administration. How long you remain in the undertaking is completely dependent of your goals and the grasp you already have on the English language. You may be placed in the first level and take all three levels (semesters) of the program or you may be placed in the second or third levels. Once you achieve high grades in Level 3, you will have met Centennial College’s English language requirement for most its programs. In addition, Level 3 students earn a college credit that they can apply to future study.
