Hospitality Foundations Sets You Up For Educational and Workplace Success

The benefits to having a solid foundation in any field are immense. You not only obtain an overview of your chosen field but also learn the best techniques to ensure you are successful from your educational journey to launching a career. If you don't have the necessary credits to apply for your program or aren't sure which direction to go in terms of education or career, a foundation program will help you to decide a route that will not only bring you success but also personal fulfillment.

If you are interested in obtaining a hospitality degree or diploma a great place to start is the Hospitality Foundations certificate program at Centennial College. This two-semester offering is meant to assist in developing a thorough understanding of the personal, academic and professional requirements needed for taking diploma and advanced diploma programs.

How exactly does this offering work?

Firstly, hospitality and tourism courses such as Sanitation, Safety and Hygiene; Geography and Tourism - Western Hemisphere, Geography and Tourism- Eastern Hemisphere and Theory of Food Fundamentals, are combined with education and job-prep courses such as: Foundations 1: Developing College Communications Skills (designed to assist students in upgrading their English skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. While focusing on developing core language competencies, students will work with course materials drawn from their program areas); Introduction to Math (through classroom instruction and computer lab work learners study the mathematics used in common business settings and common statistical applications. Students are also introduced to applications specific to the Hospitality and Tourism industry); and Life Skills and Job Readiness (Students develop personal and professional goals and work on strategies to help them achieve these goals. They have the opportunity to examine tools, techniques, hints, ideas, illustrations, examples, methods, procedures, processes, skills and resources that can help them succeed in developing competencies in each course that they attend).

Secondly, the offering gives students the opportunity to become familiar with facilities that will play an integral part in their education. For example, one of the places at Progress Campus from which students of Hospitality study is the Culinary Arts Centre. After undergoing millions of dollars worth of renovations, the facility now features: video screens, allowing for real time feeds throughout the facility; four combitherm ovens; a tandoor oven; a wok line; a brick lined pizza oven; a smoker, baker's ovensl induction cookers; a chocolate tempering machine; and traditional stoves, grills, deep fryers, and salamanders. Another facility that enhances students’ education is Horizons Restaurant. A real restaurant, it gives students the opportunity to experience a real-world environment and interact with real diners.

Thirdly, smaller class sizes allow for more individualized attention, which is especially beneficial to those for whom English is a second language. As such, there is a strong emphasis on the use of English in all its aspects by experienced professors who are sensitive to the needs to a wide range of students.
