“The first two years of the nursing program are taken here at Centennial College,” says first-year student Amanda of the Nursing (BScN) offering, “and the last two years at downtown at Ryerson Campus.” Adds student Paulina, “We get a lot of hands-on experience, so we use simulation labs and simulation dummies in the labs. That gives us a chance to practice on ‘patients’ and really practice our skills for whenever we go out into the real world.” These student testimonials are a glimpse into the in-depth training that students receive through this unique offering. Offered, as Amanda mentioned, as a collaborative program, the undertaking is actually a partnership between Ryerson University, Centennial College and George Brown College. Because it is a four-year undertaking, the nursing program Toronto offering results in a Bachelor degree and the know-how to work with persons and communities of diverse backgrounds, ages and degrees of health and illness, in a variety of contexts. In addition, grads are eligible to write the College of Nurses of Ontario registration examination to receive registered nurse designation.
Experienced, caring faculty members — who have enjoyed successful careers in the nursing field and can provide personal anecdotes and advice that enhance students’ experience — facilitate the curriculum. Also adding to the students’ Nursing program experience is Morningside Campus. As Paulina mentioned, students have opportunities to practice their skills in state-of-the-art simulation labs that feature both equipment and simulation dummies. The ultimate hands-on application of learned skills, however, occurs when students partake in a clinical placement that gives them the advantage of being able to network and make employment contacts.
Meanwhile, the curriculum itself is presented in five themes. These are integrated into each year at varying levels and include: primary healthcare/health promotion; reflective practice/critical thinking; meaningful relationships/caring/communication; political/social justice; and personal/professional development. Specific courses through which the themes are taught include: Theoretical Foundations of Nursing, Nursing Practice, Assessment of the Healthy Individual, Child Development, Nursing Implications, Ethics and Healthcare, Community Nursing, and many others.
Once students complete their studies in this nursing school in Toronto, they have the know-how to complete common nursing tasks such as: recording and analyzing patient medical histories, symptoms, and conditions; administering medications and treatments, creating patient care plans, complying with procedures, regulations, and rules in maintaining medical records; performing diagnostic tests on patients to assess their condition; discussing treatment with physicians and pharmacists; preparing patients for examinations and treatments; and more.
