Payroll Managers With College Training Play Vital Role in HR Department

In any company, Payroll Management is essential to not only keeping employees happy but also to ensuring a business runs efficiently. Professionals in this area have titles among which are: human resources and payroll generalists, payroll clerks/ officers, small business bookkeepers/ accountants, payroll accountants, payroll and benefits administrators, and general accounting coordinators. Although roles of professionals differ slightly, they are all required to be familiar with completing a range of tasks.

Paying employees by issuing paychecks or electronic transfers to their bank accounts

Preparing reports of summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages

Balancing payroll accounts by resolving payroll discrepancies

Processing monthly performance bonuses

Providing payroll information by answering employees’ questions and requests

Updating payroll records by reviewing and approving changes in exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, and job titles, and department/ division transfers

Liaising with the Human Resources professionals in regards to staff appointments, terminations, remuneration, conditions of service and other relevant matters

Centennial College’s program takes just two semesters to prepare students for these and a host of other responsibilities. Here’s how:

A concentrated focus sees students attending 10 courses over two semesters.

These courses include: Fundamentals of Financial Accounting, Payroll Compliance, Strategic Compensation, Human Resources Management in Canada, Pensions and Benefits, Payrolls Systems and more.

Industry leading payroll curriculum is supplemented by graduate level instruction in managerial accounting, strategic compensation, pensions and benefits.

Students are also made aware of emerging trends and issues in payroll management in Canada, such as the use of promising technologies and changing legislative requirements

The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) provides half of the courses.

Because of the CPA’s involvement in the offering, students are eligible to earn the Payroll Compliance Practitioner professional designation granted by the Association (registration in this will incur costs in addition to tuition).

Faculty members use a range of techniques aside from lecturing to ensure that students are retaining the information, including: simulations, case studies, and project-based learning.

The emphasis of hands-on application is on developing project management, teamwork, report writing and presentations.

Because this is a Graduate Certificate offering, applicants should have previously completed a college diploma or university degree in any discipline or have a partial post-secondary education and relevant work experience.
