Healthcare Environmental Services Management Program Uses Practical Teaching Tools

When deciding between obtaining a healthcare management degree or diploma, consider Centennial College’s Healthcare Environmental Services program. It is an offering that, in just two years, results in an Ontario College Diploma and the know-how for grads to be prepared for employment in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, buildings, schools and residential buildings. In addition, because the healthcare environment is constantly changing and has an increased need for infection control measures, Centennial College grads are in demand as they develop systems and processes to protect workers, clients and patients from environmental healthcare hazards and operate buildings that are safe.

Here are some other reasons why this Healthcare Environmental Services program is beneficial:

  • The curriculum strives to combine healthcare environmental service knowledge with business and human relations skills.

  • Students become familiar with developing, implementing and monitoring operating systems.

  • Some of the personal development skills students develop include thinking critically, problem solving, working with diverse teams, and adapting to change since the industry is constantly evolving.

  • The offering uses four different teaching methods to ensure students master each topic covered: classroom lectures, hands-on practical lab experience, field trips and guest speaker presentations.

  • Morning side Campus, from which the program is facilitated, is the college’s most technologically-advanced location. As such, students use the environment around them to learn a range of skills.

  • Morning side Campus includes large, well-equipped industry specific laboratories in which classes are conducted and where students can practice in their spare time.

  • In addition to science labs, students also have access to computer labs that contain industry specific software.

  • All of the courses in the program are complemented by two field placements (one in second semesters and one in fourth semesters).

  • Among specific courses that students complete are: Cleaning and Linen Methodology, Role of the Healthcare Environmental Services Manager, Math Application for Environmental Services, Purchasing and Materials Management, Infection Control, Plant Operations & Systems Management, Cost Analysis and more.

  • During field placement, students apply the skills they have leaned in their classes, experience what it is like to be in the field, work alongside healthcare management professionals, network, and complete hours of work that can be applied to their resumes.

There are a few requirements of applicants to this Centennial College's healthcare management program. Firstly, they must have already completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or have mature status (19 years or older). Secondly, they must have completed English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take the Centennial College English Skills Assessment for Admission; and Mathematics Grade 11 M or U, or Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required or taking of the CAATD Mathematics assessment).
