Massage Therapy Program in Toronto Offer Well-Rounded Education

"The Massage Therapy program is excellent and encompasses all aspects of massage, from the relationship between therapist and client to the structure and function of the human body," says Registered Massage Therapist Amanda Baskwill of Centennial College's Massage Therapy offering. "It is an exceptional program taught by professionals and leaders in the field of massage therapy in an encouraging and enjoyable atmosphere."

Amanda touches on important points about the three-year Massage Therapy program but let's take a closer look. First and foremost, applicants are required to possess at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. They must also have finished the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent; Biology 11C, M or U, or 12C, M or U or equivalent and one of the following sciences: 11C, M or U, or 12 C, M or U Chemistry or Physics, or Exercise Science or equivalent. After receiving an offer of admission, students receive a document to be completed by a doctor or a nurse who will confirm that the student meets the health requirements of legislated acts, ministry guidelines and agency policies.

Once accepted into the Massage Therapy Courses, students will find the focus is four-fold as they: develop an expertise in dealing with patients seeking relief from a variety of conditions affecting their health and well-being; build business and research skills to have a successful business and to advance in the profession of massage therapy; complement in-class education with clinical placements that hone their skills as they work with real patients who have real complaints; and learn how to navigate comfortably through provincial registration to practice exams.

This is achieved by learning everything from the assessment and hands-on treatment of the muscles, fascia and joints of the body to improve or maintain optimal physical health, function and mobility to business practices. Specific Massage Therapy courses include: Nutrition and Lifestyle Practices, Therapeutic Relationships, Fitness and Remedial Exercises, Issues & Research Literacy in Massage Therapy. Additionally, students obtain hands-on learning in an on-site Massage Therapy Clinic. In this clinic, students are guided and supported by an experienced Registered Massage Therapist faculty member as they interact directly with clients who come with a wide range of complaints.

Qualified graduates of the Massage Therapy program may write the registration examinations administered by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario to qualify for Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) designation. Upon graduation, students have the know-how to: conduct a massage therapy practice within an ethical framework; develop therapeutic relationships that support health and well-being; collect and use client information to determine the appropriateness of massage therapy; develop, implement and evaluate a treatment plan; and maintain professional readiness to ensure quality care.
