Aviation Program By Semester

This article breaks down the Aviation program at Centennial College known as Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance by its four semesters.

Aviation technician schools often include courses that don’t directly benefit students once they enter their careers. That isn’t the case with Centennial College’s aviation programs, which have a clear emphasis on courses that not only balance theory and practice but also relate directly to the field. Part of the reason for the stringent focus is that partners and supporters who serve as members of Centennial College’s advisory committees keep all the institution’s aviation technician schools abreast about industry developments.

Let’s take a look at the four semesters of this aviation program, which teaches students to perform tasks/activities associated with the maintenance and repair of the aircraft’s various electronic systems — electrical power distribution and control, navigation, flight instrumentation, communication and radar.

Semester One: The first semesters of this aviation program consists of basic level courses that ensure foundation. For example, Avionics Fundamentals helps students to learn the principles, concepts, operations and indications relating to avionics instrument and navigation equipment/system; aircraft directional and measuring equipment/ systems. Meanwhile, other basic level courses include: Safety and Human Factors, Piston Engines and Propellers, Theory of Flight, Aircraft Publications, Aircraft Applied Mathematics and Electrical Fundamentals.

Semester Two: Once students of this aviation technician school have a basic idea of the avionics industry, they move onto more advanced topics. Avionics Fundamentals, for example, is presented at a more advanced level and hands-on courses allow students to make use of their environment. At Ashtonbee Campus, students have access to a fully functioning airplane hangar. It is licensed by Transport Canada and has a “fleet” of 10 aircraft as well as modern equipment mirroring current industry trends. This comes in handy for courses such as Turbine Engines, Aircraft Hydraulics and Landing Gear, Airframe Systems, Aircraft Instruments and more.

Semester Three: Semester three of this aviation program consists of four courses: Avionics Installation Practices (basic avionics installation practices through the use of VHF Communication and VHF Navigation systems); Avionics Troubleshooting Practices (troubleshooting theory and application relating to various routine tasks related to an avionics technician) Communications Systems Maintenance (systems maintenance and repair, including radios, emergency locator transmitter, selective calling, passenger entertainment and services systems); and Digital Avionics Practices (digital logic and devices including numbering systems, Boolean algebra, logic gates, integrated circuit types and operational amplifiers).

Semester Four: Aside from courses like Pulse Navigation Systems and Navigation Systems Maintenance, the aviation program wraps up with advanced lessons in Digital Avionics Practices and Avionics Troubleshooting Practices.

Students must obtain at minimum a C grade average in all courses to graduate from this aviation program with an Ontario College Diploma. However, Transport Canada requires a 70 percent average, attendance and project completion requirements to receive accreditation. Lastly, program grads who meet the accreditation requirements are eligible for an 18-month experience credit and technical examination credit towards the regulatory requirements for issue of a Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License.

Aviation program applicants must prove that they have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or General Education Development or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition, they must have completed the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent and Math 11M or U or 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent.

Avionics Program Connects Students with Industry

When applying to a college program, not only should you take into account the curriculum, but also the offering’s relationships with the industry that may help you to get ahead upon graduation. At Centennial College, the avionics program (officially known as Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance) results in an Ontario College Diploma, and holds the following accreditations: Transport Canada accreditation for 18 months experience credit and technical examination credit towards the issue of a Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) Licence; and Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace accreditation for recognition towards meeting the basic training requirements for CCAA occupational trade certification as an Avionics Maintenance Technician.

In addition to industry partnerships, consider the level of commitment a college program wants from its students. The higher the standards, the better it will reflect on your resume once you graduate. At this aviation technician school program, students must achieve a minimum C grade in all courses. Transport Canada accreditation requires both a minimum B grade in every course, and an absentee rate of less than five per cent of the total program hours. Graduates who meet attendance requirements, project completion requirements, and attain 70 per cent in each course, are granted up to 18 months credit towards their Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s licence (E rating).

First and foremost, time in the avionics program is a balance of theory and lab training with shop work on various aircraft, learning basic electronics and sophisticated avionic systems used in modern aircraft and becoming comfortable with the aircraft’s various electronic systems. Specific topics include: theory of flight, aircraft publications, aircraft applied mathematics, turbine engines, airframe systems, avionics installation practices and much more. Secondly, training within the avionics program is based at Ashtonbee Campus, the province’s largest transportation training centre. As such, students have the advantage of accessing an airport hangar, airplanes and modern equipment reflecting the current trends in the industry. Thirdly, guiding avionics program students are faculty members who are highly skilled, with years of experience and extensive technical expertise. Aside from faculty, partners and supporters of the avionics program are members of Centennial College’s advisory committees and participate as guest speakers and panelists, sharing their knowledge and expertise for the benefit and enhancement of the program.

Applicants to this aviation technician school program must have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or General Education Development or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. Avionics Programs Train Students in Electronic Systems

Airlines/operators, manufactures, the military, aviation training companies, aviation repair and overhaul and aviation equipment/avionics companies are just some of the organizations that hire graduates of Canada’s Avionics Programs. Once such program is offered at Centennial College as a two-year offering called Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance. This particular program trains students in skills from basic electronics to sophisticated avionic systems used in modern aircraft.

If you are interested in applying for Centennial College’s avionics program, you must have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or General Education Development or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. You must also have completed the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent and Math 11M or U or 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent.

Once you are accepted, you partake in a program that is both approved by Transit Canada and certified by the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council. The emphasis in Avionics Maintenance is on the aircraft’s various electronic systems: electrical power distribution and control, navigation, flight instrumentation, communication and radar. Aviation maintenance servicing practices and procedures, as well as aviation regulation requirements are also included. Students are given equal time in theory and lab training, which allows them to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge. Specific courses within the avionics program include: Avionics Fundamentals (principles, concepts, operations and indications relating to avionics instrument and navigation equipment/system; aircraft directional and measuring equipment/ systems are studied); Digital Avionics Practices (student learn about digital logic and devices including numbering systems, Boolean algebra, logic gates, integrated circuit types and operational amplifiers); Pulse Navigation Systems (pulse navigation systems are studied, including air traffic control transponders, distance measuring equipment, radar and collision avoidance systems); and more.

Shop work on various aircraft is also included. It is carried out of Centennial College’s Ashtonbee Campus, which is the largest transportation training centre in the province and includes an airplane hangar. All instructors within the Aviation Technician Schools have years of experience and extensive technical expertise as aviation technicians. In addition to seasoned teachers, there are also guest speakers and panelists who come in to share personal stories and lecture about industry-related topics.

Students in the aviation technician school must achieve a minimum C grade in all courses to graduate. Please note that Transport Canada accreditation requires both a minimum B grade in every course and an absentee rate of less than five per cent of the total program hours. Graduates who meet attendance requirements, project completion requirements, and attain 70 per cent in each course, are granted up to 18 months credit towards their Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s licence (E rating).

Upon avionics program graduation, students go on to work as technicians whose jobs include: maintaining engine operations, flight patterns, navigation systems, radio communications and weather radar systems. Overview:

The emphasis in Option E, Avionics Maintenance, is on the aircraft’s various electronic systems - electrical power distribution and control, navigation, flight instrumentation, communication and radar. You are given equal time in theory and lab training. Shop work on various aircraft is also included. Aviation maintenance servicing practices and procedures, as well as aviation regulation requirements, round out this training.

Aviation technicians program is also designed to prepare bench technicians for avionic-approved shops and aircraft manufacturing companies.

The program is both Transport Canada approved and Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council certified as a recognized avionics maintenance training program.


Admission Requirements:
Centennial College expects students applying for admission to certificate or diploma programs to present at minimum:

  • An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or General Education Development or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older
  • Compulsary English 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent
  • Math 11M or U or 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent

Graduation Requirements
